With the deadline for rating appeals looming large on the horizon, small and medium business owners are being encouraged to find out more about what impact the new Rating Valuations 2017 will have on Oxfordshire businesses.
Our rating expert Robert Seares is speaking at a number of Oxford events in the next few weeks where he will be sharing his knowledge and answering questions about what actions businesses need to take in order to guard against any rate rises. His talk is entitled “Rating Revaluation 2017: opportunities and pitfalls” and will cover small business rate relief, the transitional rate relief scheme and the key dates. He will also be explaining the new rating appeal system.
The new rateable values announced in September 2017 included significant increases and decreases depending on the type of property type and geographical location.
An important factor is that if a business wishes to appeal against their current rating list assessment, they have to do so by 31 March.
The 2017 rating list comes into force on 1 April. Any appeals will then be subject to the new ‘check, challenge and appeal’ rating system. This new business rate appeal system increases the burden on the ratepayer to provide more detailed rating arguments with proof including rating valuations to substantiate any claim for a rate reduction.
Robert is a chartered surveyor with nearly 35 years’ experience in the commercial property market in Oxford and is well qualified to take about the challenges that the new rating valuations pose to Oxford businesses.
